TikTok Live Selling in Malaysia: How to Know if a Live Session Actually Made Money
Short answer: A live session made money only after you subtract everything the session cost from its GMV — platform fees, product cost, GMV Max ads, host pay, samples, affiliate commission and returns. A 4-hour live that did RM 20,000 GMV can net anywhere from RM 5,000 to a loss, depending on those six numbers. Judge hosts by session net profit, not by the GMV counter on screen.
Session net profit = Session GMV − platform fees − COGS − GMV Max ads − host cost − samples − affiliate commission − returns
Why the GMV counter lies to you
During a live, the only number everyone stares at is GMV. It feels like winning. But GMV is revenue, not profit — and live selling in particular stacks extra costs that a normal order never carries: the host's pay, the ads you burned to fill the room, and the samples you shipped to creators to warm it up. Two hosts can both hit RM 20,000 GMV and one takes home RM 6,000 while the other loses money, purely because of what sat underneath the number.
What does a TikTok live actually cost per session?
Every live order carries the normal TikTok Shop Malaysia fee stack. As of the Feb 2026 rate update — confirm on the official Seller Centre rate card — a programme seller pays roughly:
- Commission around 10.26% (category-based, so hedge it)
- Bonus Cashback programme fee around 4.86%
- Transaction fee around 3.78%
- Platform Support Fee of about RM 0.54 per delivered order
That is roughly 18.9% of order value plus RM 0.54 per order before you have paid for a single thing yourself. On top of that, a live session adds:
- GMV Max ads — the spend that pushed traffic into the room
- Host cost — a flat session fee, a GMV percentage, or both
- Samples — product sent to affiliates and the host
- Affiliate commission — on any live orders attributed to a creator
- Returns — live buying is impulsive, so return rates run higher
Worked example: one 4-hour session
| Line | Amount (RM) |
|---|---|
| Session GMV (250 orders, avg RM 80) | 20,000.00 |
| − Platform fees (~18.9% + RM 0.54 x 250) | 3,915.00 |
| = Net Revenue | 16,085.00 |
| − COGS (35% of GMV) | 7,000.00 |
| = Gross Profit | 9,085.00 |
| − GMV Max ads | 2,500.00 |
| − Host cost (base RM 500 + 3.5% of GMV) | 1,200.00 |
| − Samples (host + affiliates) | 300.00 |
| − Affiliate commission (10% on RM 4,000 attributed) | 400.00 |
| − Returns impact (10% return rate) | 900.00 |
| = Session Net Profit | 3,785.00 (margin ~19%) |
RM 20,000 on screen. RM 3,785 in the bank. That is still a good session — but now imagine ads ran to RM 4,500 and returns hit 15%. The same RM 20,000 GMV quietly turns into a loss, and nobody watching the GMV counter would have known. (Figures illustrative — confirm your own category rates and costs.)
The trap: paying hosts on GMV
If you reward a host purely on GMV, you are paying them to spend your ad budget and discount hard, because both pump GMV while quietly eating your margin. A host doing RM 12,000 GMV on RM 800 of ads with a 6% return rate can net more than a host doing RM 20,000 on RM 4,000 of ads with 15% returns. Rank hosts by session net profit and profit-per-hour, and the picture often flips.
Which numbers to watch per session
- Net profit and net margin, not GMV
- Ad cost as a % of session GMV — creeping past 12–15% is a warning
- Return rate on live orders specifically, which differs from your shop average
- Profit per live hour, so a 4-hour and a 2-hour session compare fairly
- Host cost as a % of gross profit, not of GMV
Doing this per session, automatically
You can build this table by hand after every live — pulling GMV, matching GMV Max spend, allocating host pay, and waiting weeks for returns to settle. Almost nobody keeps it up. Inseller was built by a seller running TikTok lives who needed this exact answer: it shows real net profit per live session using actual settled fees, with ads, host cost, samples, affiliate and returns already subtracted — so you rank hosts by what they earned you, not by the number on the screen.
