How Much Do TikTok Shop Sellers Actually Make in Malaysia? (Realistic Margins 2026)

Short answer: There is no reliable public survey of Malaysian seller profits, so the honest way to answer is to model it from the known fee stack. Build up ~19% platform fees, 25–45% COGS, 5–15% ads and 0–20% affiliate, and realistic net margins land in three bands: 15–25% for a strong operator, 5–15% for a typical seller, and below 0% for a badly-run store. These are illustrative bands from fee maths, not statistics.

Net margin = 100% − platform fees (~19%) − COGS − ads − affiliate − returns

Why model it instead of quoting a number?

Anyone who tells you "the average TikTok Shop seller in Malaysia makes X%" is either guessing or selling you something. There is no trustworthy census of private seller P&Ls. What we can do is take the fees TikTok Shop actually charges — which are public — and stack the real cost layers on top. That produces a defensible range instead of a made-up average.

What is fixed: the platform fee stack

On the Feb 2026 rate card, a TikTok Shop Malaysia programme seller pays roughly (all SST-inclusive — confirm your category on the official Seller Centre rate card):

  • Commission around 10.26% (category-based; some categories are higher)
  • Transaction fee around 3.78%
  • Cashback / bonus programme fee around 4.86% (capped as a fixed RM 50 on high-value orders)
  • Platform support fee of about RM 0.54 per delivered order

That is roughly 19% of order value plus RM 0.54 per order before you have paid for a single thing yourself. See the full breakdown in TikTok Shop seller fees. The ~19% is largely out of your control. Everything below is where sellers win or lose.

What varies: the costs you control

  • COGS: 25–45% of GMV. The single biggest lever. A private-label product at 25–30% is a different business from a reselling model at 45%.
  • Ad spend: 5–15% of GMV. Efficient sellers keep blended ad cost low; a store buying all its traffic runs at the top of this range or beyond.
  • Affiliate commission: 0–20% of GMV. Organic sellers pay little; creator-driven stores can pay 10–20% on affiliate-attributed orders.
  • Returns: 1–6% of GMV. Refunds also take fees that may not come back — see the true cost of returns.

Net profit on RM 50,000RM 11,000RM 5,000−RM 2,500

The strong operator and the struggling store can post the same RM 50,000 GMV and end the month RM 13,500 apart. That gap is not sales — it is COGS discipline, ad efficiency and affiliate control. This is exactly why GMV is not profit.

What actually moves a seller between bands

  1. COGS. Dropping COGS from 45% to 35% adds ten points of net margin — more than most sellers gain from any sales push.
  2. Ad efficiency. ROAS that looks fine can still leave a thin net margin once fees and COGS are counted. See ROAS vs profit.
  3. Affiliate rate. A generous commission funds velocity but eats margin; it belongs to the specific SKUs it drives, not the whole store — see the real cost of affiliate commission.
  4. The losing SKUs. A store in the "typical" band often has a few SKUs quietly in the red dragging the average down — find them here.

The honest takeaway

A well-run TikTok Shop in Malaysia can absolutely clear a 15–25% net margin, a typical one lands in single digits, and plenty of high-GMV stores run at a loss without realising it. The band you fall into is decided by costs you control, not by how much you sell. The only way to know your real band is to compute net profit per order against actual settled fees.

The Inseller angle

These bands are a model; your real number is knowable. Inseller connects Shopee and TikTok Shop and shows your actual net margin per order, per SKU and per live session from reconciled settlement fees — so you find out which band you are really in instead of guessing from GMV. Built by a Malaysian seller who wanted the real number for their own store, not an industry average.
